6 Tips for Securing Your Home While Traveling

Going on a vacation is a super exciting and thrilling experience. But before you go on vacation, you need to make sure that you have taken enough steps to protect your home while you are away. Before you leave, it’s important to place in a few security measures while your house is empty. It will give you a piece of mind and let you enjoy your vacation without any worries.

Here are six practical tips to help you secure your home while traveling, giving you peace of mind throughout your journey.

Lock Up Thoroughly

It sounds like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to overlook in the hustle of packing and planning. Before you leave, double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked. Don’t forget about sliding doors, basement windows, and even the small bathroom window as these can be tempting entry points for intruders. If there is any broken window film or lock then get it repaired before you leave.

Invest in Timers for Lights and Electronics

A dark and unlit home is an inviting target for burglars. Invest in timers for your lights and even a TV or radio. Set them up to turn on and off at varying times to give the illusion that someone is home. Also set up smart home security systems so that you can control operations with your phone while you are away. When a potential intruder spots a security camera, that will be discouraged from targeting your house.

Hold Your Mail and Deliveries

A pile of mail or packages on your doorstep is a clear signal that you’re not home. Put your mail on hold or ask a neighbour to collect it for you. Another way is to simply pause any regular deliveries like newspapers or magazines. An empty driveway and an untouched mailbox are signs to burglars that your home is vacant.

Secure Valuable Items in a Safe

While you’re away, ensure that your valuable items, confidential documents, and sentimental possessions are locked away in a safe or a secure hiding spot. This provides an extra layer of protection in case an intruder manages to gain entry. You can peacefully enjoy your vacation when you know that your valuables are safe.

Limit Social Media Posts

It’s tempting to share your travel excitement with friends and family on social media, but be cautious about sharing too much information. Broadcasting that you’re away from home can alert potential thieves that your house is unattended. Wait until you’re back to share those vacation photos. You can share your photos a week or month after you have arrived back at home.

Seek Help of a Trusted Neighbour or Friend

Having a neighbour or friend keep an eye on your home can be invaluable. They can pick up your mail, water your plants, and just generally give the appearance that someone is present. Let them know how to reach you in case of an emergency and provide them with spare keys if necessary. You can also give your surveillance camera footage access to your neighbour so that they can spot any suspicious activity around your home.
