Top 6 Ways to Improve Home Security

Your personal  home’s peace of mind shouldn’t be at a premium. The truth is that even small modifications to your property security can greatly reduce burglaries.

The data indicates that a secure house is less susceptible to being targeted. The FBI’s 2022 report revealed that homes with visible security measures had 23.8% less chance of robberies.

For many homeowners, keeping all these secure is a main concern. But with the high cost of living, how do you do it? Which smart home security systems can you choose to protect your apartment?

This guide provides tips on improving home security and preventing potential burglars.

Install Security Alarms

Security alarms are needed to maintain home safety. They inform you and the authorities when someone enters your property without permission. They can also track human behavior and easily detect suspicious activities in and around your home.

With security alarms, you don’t have to worry about the safety of your home during your absence. You are assured that the appropriate authorities will be alerted if an incident happens while you are not there.

Install Alarm Systems

Home alarm systems monitor smoke levels and heat sources and notify occupants of potential dangers, enabling them to contact authorities if necessary. Time is the primary factor in any emergency, but time is of the essence in the case of fire. However, home security systems protect against intrusion scenarios and serve as additional protection barriers for homeowners.

In just minutes of a fire breaking out, the home may be filled with thick black smoke, making it impossible for family members to breathe. A smoke detector by itself cannot notify the police, but heat detectors can be purchased without a home security system installed.

The U.S. Fire Administration states a small flame can rapidly escalate into a full-blown fire within thirty seconds. The saying “where there is smoke, there is fire” also implies that heat can lead to fire, making heat detectors crucial in fire prevention products.

Install Exterior Lighting and Motion Sensor Lights

Outdoor lighting can be a deterrent, provided it is turned on and off as if someone is at home. Ensure that the approach to your home, notably any entryway, is well-lit, with a light timer if needed. This can increase security and comfort when you return home after dark.

Motion sensor lights are easy to install and valuable at the back of a house or apartment. These lights are also effortlessly accessible and not very costly. An unexpected light can deter burglars who may wonder about other security devices in place.

Increase Gate and Fence Security

Avoid allowing intruders to enter through old gates or blown-over fencing. Your home garden gate should be securely constructed and the same height as the surrounding walls or fences. Metal gates are more difficult to climb than solid wood substitutes, and their open structure prevents intruders from accessing them.

You must verify that the hinges, bolt, and padlock are secured on the garden side. If feasible, protect a gate with two separate locks.

Confirm that your fencing is in good condition to prevent thieves from accessing your area. Seek for pre-assembled trellis panels or think about fastening them to the wall or fence’s upper surface. These are only useful to support a climbing plant but not a climbing burglar.

Moreover, inspect that your garden gate’s hinges, bolt, and padlock are securely fastened.

Avoid leaving doors unlocked.

Forced doors may not always be caused by the lock allowing entry but by the door frame itself. If you want to decrease the danger of this happening, consider implementing a frame reinforcement. Strengthening the space around the striking plate of your lock can significantly improve your first line of defense against unwanted intrusion.

And that’s not all; when it comes to gain entry through your door, there are many other options besides using force.

An outward-opening door may put you at risk of a hinge attack. This describes when a thief can lift the door off its hinges, permitting them easy entry to the property. To prevent these circumstances, you should add hinge bolts to your doors. These features ensure the door remains securely closed, even when the hinges are subjected to forceful force.
